On Monday night, the Philadelphia 76ers defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers with a score of 123-121, ending the Cavaliers’ nine-game winning streak. The game saw Buddy Hield, who was acquired by the Sixers from Indiana last week before the trade deadline, score 24 points while Kelly Oubre Jr. also contributed 24 points. The Cavs nearly managed to rally from a 10-point deficit in the final minutes of the game but were unable to do so, with Darius Garland missing a 3-pointer from the right corner at the buzzer that would have given them the win.

The victory was a much-needed one for the Sixers, who have been trying to stay afloat while waiting for their star player, Joel Embiid, to return from knee surgery. The win was only their third in 11 games, and they will be hoping to prevent themselves from sliding too far down the standings.

Hield, who is known for his outside shooting ability, made two 3-pointers and scored nine straight points in the fourth quarter, helping the Sixers open up a 113-106 lead. His performance was praised by coach Nick Nurse, who said, “He can shoot the ball – we know that.”

Tyrese Maxey, who was named an All-Star this year, added 22 points for the Sixers, including a crucial free throw that gave the Cavs a last possession to extend their winning streak. However, Donovan Mitchell, who led the Cavs with 36 points, had a contested layup blocked by Oubre, and Garland was unable to convert the rebound into a game-winning shot.

The Cavs, who had won 17 of their last 18 games before this loss, were still within seven points of the Sixers when Oubre drained a 3-pointer with 1:25 left to put the Sixers up 120-110. But Cleveland battled back, with Garland hitting a 3-pointer and Mitchell converting a three-point play before hitting a 3 to make it 120-119 with 14 seconds to go.

Jarrett Allen added 21 points and 10 rebounds for the Cavs, while Evan Mobley contributed 14 points and 10 boards. Despite the loss, Mitchell urged his team to maintain the right mentality and not get bored with success, saying, “It’s OK to have a blip on the radar, but for us it’s continuing to sustain that and not getting bored with success.”

The Sixers were without forward Tobias Harris, who was sidelined due to a sore left hip. They are expected to sign guard Kyle Lowry on Tuesday after he clears waivers. The 37-year-old, who is a Philadelphia native, had his contract bought out and was released over the weekend by Charlotte, which acquired him from Miami last month.
