Former six-time NBA All-Star and Rookie of the Year winner Blake Griffin has announced retirement from the NBA. After a luxurious Griffin played 14 seasons in the NBA, made five All-NBA teams, and was the 2011 slam dunk contest champion. His most memorable with the LA Clippers was during the 2010s in their iconic “Lob City” era, which consisted of Point-God Chris Paul and Highflyer Centre Deandre Jordan.
Per a posting on social media, Griffin wrote: “I never envisioned myself as the guy who would have a ‘letter to basketball’ retirement announcement … and I’m still not going to be that guy. But as I reflected on my career, the one feeling I kept coming back to and the one thing I wanted to express was thankfulness.
“I have to acknowledge my parents, Tommy and Gail, and my brother, Taylor, for their unconditional support and guidance. … The game of basketball has given me so much in this life, and I wouldn’t change a thing.”
Griffin was drafted in 2009, but a knee subsequently sidelined him for the whole of his rookie year, but made an impact on the league, as he went on to win the Rookie of the Year, impressing crowds of fans and haters with his impressive dunks and throughout his career become a knockdown shooter when called upon, splashing down 538 career threes, with his career-high being 6.
Griffin played with the Clippers from 2009-2018 and ranks the No. 2 scorer in Clippers history (10,863) and ranks in the team’s Top 10 in games played, assists, steals, rebounds, field goals made and free throws made.
In 2011, Panini America signed Griffin a long-term deal that would feature his autographs and memorabilia in their products. He appeared on the cover of NBA 2K13 alongside fellow NBA stars Kevin Durant and Derrick Rose. He has appeared in commercials for Kia Motors, Subway, Vizio, and GameFly.
