Now it’s time to investigate the most useless body parts throughout the human body, today we will go through the biggest two mysteries that not even many scientists can solve, why do we have an appendix and a set of tonsils?
PART ONE: APPENDIX
Let’s start with the appendix. The appendix is a thin tube that is joined to the large intestine. It sits in the lower right part of your belly near your abdomen. As a child, your appendix is a working part of your immune system, which helps your body fight disease, but past the child stage, many say that it has no use. Recent research states that our ancestors used their appendixes to digest tough food like tree bark, but we don’t use ours in digestion now, and most normal people do not indulge in tree bark.
Some scientists such as Hawaii Pacific Health say that it is used to store certain healthy types of gut bacteria that otherwise could be altered or changed during an intestinal illness or with overuse of antibiotics. Dignity Health suggests, “After intense diarrhea, the appendix repopulates and reboots the intestine with good bacteria before harmful bacteria finds a home there.” according to them we aren’t the only creatures with an appendix approximately 533 mammal species also live with an appendix.
One known benefit of the appendix, according to the information from News-Medical is that it has lymphoid cells, which help the body fight infections. This strongly suggests that the appendix plays a role in the immune system. The appendix has been found to play a role in mammalian mucosal immune function.
The cons of the appendix are that you may get appendicitis, which is caused by a virus, bacteria, or parasites, in your digestive tract. Sometimes it may happen when the tube that joins your large intestine and appendix is blocked or trapped by stool. Sometimes tumors can cause appendicitis. The appendix then becomes sore and swollen. there is a serious risk your appendix may burst or rupture. This can happen as soon as 48 to 72 hours after you have symptoms. It can cause a severe, life-threatening infection called peritonitis in your belly.
PART TWO: TONSILS
The next useless body part, and many are getting removed is the tonsils. According to the NIH, tonsils are part of the body’s immune system Their location at the throat and palate, can prevent germs entering the body through the mouth or the nose. The tonsils contain white blood cells, which kill germs.
You can still get colds, sore throats, and throat infections once you remove your tonsils, But you won’t get tonsillitis unless the tonsils grow back which is next to impossible. Even though the tonsils are part of the immune system, it doesn’t stop your body from fighting infections in the mouth, it just reduces your chance of winning the battle by a fraction.
The pros of tonsils are that they trap bacteria and viruses that you breathe in, helping prevent throat and lung infections, but the cons are that they become so large that they obstruct the air passage of the affected person and end in sleep apnea or snoring. Another con is Tonsilitis, according to NHS,“ Tonsillitis caused by a viral infection, such as cold or flu. Some cases can also be caused by a bacterial infection, typically a strain of bacteria called group A streptococcus bacteria. Tonsillitis itself isn’t contagious, but the infections that cause it are.”
CONCLUSION
In conclusion, the human body is a marvel of complexity and wonder. From the intricate systems that keep us alive to the smallest cellular structures, our bodies are a testament to the beauty of nature’s design. It’s truly amazing to consider the many different and wonderful things that make up the human body and enable us to live, move, and experience the world around us.
