In a historic NBA vs. WNBA 3-Point Challenge held during the State Farm All-Star Saturday Night, Stephen Curry narrowly defeated Sabrina Ionescu in a thrilling contest. Shooting with WNBA basketballs from the NBA 3-point line, Ionescu put up an impressive score of 26, matching the best score from the preceding Starry 3-Point Contest. She made a fantastic start, hitting her first seven shots and going 8-for-9 on money balls. However, she couldn’t keep up the pace towards the end, making only five of her final ten shots.
On the other hand, Curry had an exceptional performance, hitting two perfect racks and going 5-for-5 from both the left and right wings. He saved his best for last, with his final rack being his money back rack in the right corner. With just three shots needed to win, he missed his first shot but then drained the final four to finish with a score of 29.
This challenge was not just a competition; each shot made triggered a donation from State Farm to the NBA Foundation to support economic empowerment in the Black community.
The challenge between Curry and Ionescu was dubbed “Stephen vs. Sabrina.” It all started when Ionescu set a WNBA and NBA single-round event record by scoring 37 points (out of a possible 40 points) in the final round of the STARRY WNBA 3-Point Contest at AT&T WNBA All-Star 2023, winning the contest for the first time. Curry then raised the challenge further when he was mic’d up during Golden State’s Jan. 25 game against the Sacramento Kings on TNT. Ionescu responded on social media officially accepting the challenge.
Curry, a two-time NBA 3-Point Contest champion, holds the record for the most 3-pointers made in the regular season with 3,577. Meanwhile, Ionescu set a WNBA single-season record with 128 3-pointers in 2023.
