The Memphis Grizzlies are set to retire Marc Gasol’s jersey number, No. 33, in a ceremony that will take place on April 6, 2022, during their game against the Philadelphia 76ers. This announcement comes as a tribute to Gasol’s outstanding contributions to the team during his 11-year tenure with the franchise.
Gasol, a three-time NBA All-Star, is considered one of the best players in the history of the Grizzlies. He holds several franchise records, including the most minutes played (25,917), most starts (762), most baskets (4,341), most free throws made (2,701), most defensive rebounds (4,624), most total rebounds (5,952), and most blocks (1,135). He also ranks second in games played (769), points (11,684), assists (2,639), offensive rebounds (1,318), double-doubles (194), and triple-doubles (5), and third in steals (708).
Gasol’s accomplishments with the Grizzlies include winning the NBA Defensive Player of the Year award in 2012-13, making him the first European player to receive the honor. He was also a first-team All-NBA selection in 2014-15, making him the only player in franchise history to achieve this feat. Additionally, he appeared in three All-Star Games and was a second-team All-NBA pick in 2012-13.
Although Gasol played for other teams, such as the Toronto Raptors and Los Angeles Lakers, he spent most of his career with the Grizzlies. He announced his retirement from the NBA earlier this week, setting the stage for the team to honor him in a special way. Gasol will become the second player in the franchise’s history to have his jersey number retired, following Zach Randolph, whose No. 50 jersey was retired in December 2021.
