The Phoenix Suns just made a big-time move — literally.
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Charlotte Hornets are trading 7-foot center Mark Williams to Phoenix in exchange for the No. 29 pick in tonight’s draft and a 2029 first-round pick. That future pick is the least favorable of Cleveland, Utah, and Minnesota (1-5 protected), per sources.
For Phoenix, this is a clear response to one of their biggest 2024-25 weaknesses: size. After getting bullied in the paint all season, they’re now reshaping their interior presence with Williams and top international prospect Khaman Maluach, who they selected in this year’s draft.
Mark Williams, a former lottery pick and elite shot-blocker, gives the Suns a true rim protector to balance their offense-heavy core of Booker, Beal, and Durant (if he stays). It’s a big swing, but a necessary one.
Meanwhile, the Hornets continue stockpiling picks, netting two first-rounders in this deal. It signals a long-term vision for Charlotte’s front office, who are clearly betting on the future instead of hanging on to injury-prone bigs.
With the West getting stronger by the day, this move might be exactly what the Suns needed to return to serious contention.
