Victor Wembanyama, a rookie of the San Antonio Spurs, achieved a rare feat in the NBA recently. In a game against the Toronto Raptors, he posted a triple-double that included ten blocked shots, which is a category that is not frequently seen in triple-doubles. This makes him the first player in more than three years to accomplish this remarkable feat.
Wembanyama’s triple-double performance was made up of 27 points, 14 rebounds, 5 assists, and 10 blocked shots, which he achieved in just 29 minutes of playtime. This achievement is even more impressive as he is currently leading the NBA in blocked shots this season.
The last time a player recorded a triple-double with blocks was back in January 2021 when Clint Capela of the Atlanta Hawks had 13 points, 19 rebounds, and 10 blocks against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
It’s worth noting that Hakeem Olajuwon holds the record for the most triple-doubles with blocks since the NBA started officially recording the stat. He accomplished this feat 11 times, while Dikembe Mutombo did it 10 times, and David Robinson, a Spurs Hall of Famer, did it nine times. Robinson’s tally included a quadruple-double.
Artis Gilmore is the only other Spurs player to have a triple-double with blocks, and he achieved this feat in the 1984-85 season.
Wembanyama, who was the first pick in the last year’s NBA draft, is set to participate in the Rising Stars game on Friday night and the Skills Competition on Saturday night, making him one of the most exciting young prospects in the NBA.
