Ben Simmons

Ben Simmons is one of the biggest what-ifs the NBA has ever seen. Simmons was the 1st overall pick in the 2016 draft by the Philadelphia 76ers. He was the guy drafted to be the right-hand man to their all-star center Joel Embiid. Simmons would miss his entire rookie season due to an injured right foot, but he would make his debut in the 2017-2018 season, claiming that year’s Rookie of the Year award. This was just the start of what seemed like a long and promising career for Simmons. The next 3 seasons after his rookie year Simmons would be voted into the NBA’s All-Star game, better than that he would make the All-NBA 3rd team in 2020 while making the All-Defensive lineup in 2020 as well as 2021. So, where did it all go wrong with Ben Simmons?

Well, in the 2021-2022 season, Simmons started to sit out games as he demanded a trade out of Philadelphia. His wishes were met as he was traded to the Brooklyn Nets in Februaryof 2022 for All-Star guard James Harden. Now, this Ben Simmons we were seeing in Brooklyn was nothing like the Ben Simmons we saw in those years in Philadelphia, in 90 games for the Brooklyn Nets Simmons only averaged 6.5 points per game, with 6.3 assists per game and 6.2 rebounds per game. Eventually, the Nets who were tired of Simmons’ lack of production and all of the games he was missing agreed to buyout his contract which would make him a free agent. Simmons went on to sign with the Clippers just a few days later. For the Clippers, Simmons’ number dropped even more, now down to just 3 points per game with 3 assists and 4 rebounds in just 18 games for the Clippers. After the 2024-2025 season came to an end, so did the career of Ben Simmons as he was not re-signed by the Clippers or signed by any other team in free agency. Now Simmons has his eyes set on becoming a professional fisherman. While his NBA career might be finished, you have to admit, those years we watched in Philly were some amazing years leaving everybody wanting to see more.
