The Los Angeles Lakers have announced the signing of free agent guard Spencer Dinwiddie. Dinwiddie, who hails from Los Angeles, will join the Lakers after playing for the Brooklyn Nets in the current season, where he appeared in 48 games and started in all of them. He recorded impressive averages of 12.6 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 6.0 assists in 30.7 minutes per game.
The 6’5″ guard has played in 514 games across nine-plus seasons in the NBA, with previous stints at Brooklyn, Dallas, Washington, and Detroit. He has career averages of 13.6 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 5.3 assists per game in 28.0 minutes. Dinwiddie has also played in 28 career NBA Playoff games, averaging 14.1 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 3.6 assists in 28.3 minutes per game while shooting 42.5 percent from the field, 40.6 percent from beyond the arc, and 77.7 percent from the foul line.
The Vice President of Basketball Operations and General Manager of the Lakers, Rob Pelinka, expressed his excitement over Dinwiddie’s signing, stating that the guard’s play-making and aggressiveness from the guard position would provide valuable depth as the Lakers continue their strong push towards the back-half of the season. Pelinka also added that Dinwiddie’s wealth of experience and proven success in the postseason would be an asset to the Lakers’ roster.
Dinwiddie, who was originally picked in the second round of the 2014 NBA Draft by the Detroit Pistons after playing college basketball at the University of Colorado, brings his talents back to his hometown of Los Angeles. He attended William Howard Taft High School, where he was named the John R. Wooden California High School Player of the Year in 2011. Dinwiddie will wear jersey No. 26 for the Lakers.
