The Pistons have achieved an outstanding 40-13 record ahead of the All-Star break. This has been a historic turn around considering they finished with an abysmal 14-68 record just 2 seasons ago. A large part of this success is attributed to the hiring of head coach J.B. Bickerstaff and president of basketball operations Trajan Langdon. Not only have they been able to build a winning roster, but they found a way to tap into the potential of the guys they already had. Of course, you can’t mention the Pistons success without also mentioning the ascension to super-star status of Cade Cunnigham. He is having the best season of his young NBA career, averaging 25.3 points per game, 5.6 rebounds, and 9.6 assists per game. Cade was named an All-Star starter this season for the first time in his career. The other big name worth mentioning is Jalen Duren, who has taken a massive leap this year. He has gone from a young athletic big to a dominant force in this league averaging 17.7 points per game and 10.4 rebounds per game on 63.1% shooting. These numbers were enough to get Jalen named an All-Star this season, which will be the first of his career.
Obviously Cade and Jalen have formed a new explosive dynamic duo in the league and has been a key contributor to this Pistons team’s success. But the beautiful thing about this Pistons team is how connected they are and how many guys embody what it means to be a Detroit Piston. The Pistons have the 2nd best defensive rating in the league, which of course is a staple of the great Pistons teams of old. Whether it be the Bad Boys in the 80’s or the 2004 championship team anchored by Ben Wallace, defense was the identity of those teams. Fast forward to 2025-26 and the current Pistons squad has embodied that defensive mindset themselves. Isaiah Stewart and Ausar Thompson being the main catalysts of the defense. Stewart won defensive player of the month in December and Thompson won it for the month of January. Both Thompson and Stewart play with their hair on fire and intense hustle. Which is common among the rest of the roster with guys like Ron Holland, Caris LeVert, Paul Reed, Javonte Green, etc. Which points to another reason this team is so good and that is their depth. The Pistons have one of the deepest teams in the NBA and have won numerous games without their Stars. They continuously have guys like Duncan Robinson and Daniss Jenkins step up and play immensely well. Overall this Pistons team is a well oiled machine led by an incredible coaching staff, a super-star duo in Cade Cunnigham and Jalen Duren, a defensive identity and remarkable depth. The Detroit Pistons aren’t afraid of anyone and are poised for a deep run in the NBA Playoffs.
