As a result of the altercation that took place during the Heat-Pelicans game on February 23, the NBA has announced a series of suspensions. The incident involved several players from both teams, including Miami’s Thomas Bryant and New Orleans’ Jose Alvarado, who have been suspended for multiple games for leaving the bench area during the altercation and fighting.
Miami Heat forward Jimmy Butler and New Orleans Pelicans forward Naji Marshall have each been suspended for one game without pay for instigating and engaging in an on-court altercation. The announcement was made by Joe Dumars, the Executive Vice President and Head of Basketball Operations.
In addition to Butler and Marshall, Heat center Thomas Bryant and Pelicans guard Jose Alvarado have been suspended for three games without pay. They left the bench area during an on-court altercation and proceeded to fight. Heat forward Nikola Jović has also been suspended for one game without pay for leaving the bench area and entering an on-court altercation.
The incident began when Miami’s Kevin Love committed a foul on New Orleans’ Zion Williamson with 11:19 remaining in the fourth quarter. Following the foul, Butler and Marshall engaged in a physical altercation. Alvarado and Bryant then joined in, leading to their ejection from the game. All four players were assessed technical fouls.
Alvarado will begin serving his suspension tonight when the New Orleans Pelicans host the Chicago Bulls. Marshall will also serve his suspension tonight. Bryant’s suspension will begin on Monday, February 26, when the Miami Heat visit the Sacramento Kings. Butler and Jović will also serve their suspensions on that night.
