New York Knicks centre, Mitchell Robinson, made his much-awaited return to the court against the Toronto Raptors on Wednesday, after being benched for 50 games following a left ankle injury in December. The 7-foot-tall player had not played a single game since December 8th, when he was injured during a defeat against the Celtics at TD Garden, which required him to undergo immediate surgery. Despite his prolonged absence, Robinson still leads the NBA with an average of 5.3 offensive rebounds per game.
While Robinson had been listed as uncertain on New York’s injury report, Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau expressed his confidence in the team’s star player, saying that Robinson would play if he felt comfortable after warmups. “We’re glad to have him back,” Thibodeau said.
The Knicks are currently ranked 4th in the Eastern Conference and have won six of their last seven games, thanks in no small part to Robinson’s absence. In his sixth season, Robinson entered the game against the Raptors averaging 6.3 points per game and a career-high 9.9 rebounds and steals with 1.5 SPG. He is also averaging 1.3 BPG and 0.7 APG in the 21 games he has played so far. With his return, the Knicks are hopeful of continuing their winning streak and making a strong push for the playoffs.
