The Kia NBA Defensive Players of the Month for December have been announced, and two elite forward-centers have earned the honors. Memphis Grizzlies’ Jaren Jackson Jr. took the award for the Western Conference, while Cleveland Cavaliers’ Evan Mobley claimed it in the East. Lets dive into their outstanding defensive performances.
Jaren Jackson Jr.: Western Conference Defensive Player of the Month
Jackson Jr., the reigning Kia NBA Defensive Player of the Year, showcased his defensive prowess throughout December. Over 14 games, he racked up 23 steals and 22 blocks, making him the only player in the league to record at least 20 steals and 20 blocks during the month. His efforts guided the Grizzlies to a strong 10-4 record, placing them second in the Western Conference. Jackson Jr. consistently made life difficult for opponents, holding them to 9.4% below their average field goal percentages when he was the primary defender. This was the best defended field goal percentage differential in the league. Additionally, he limited opponents to just 40.2% shooting, combining rim protection and perimeter defense to solidify his place as a defensive anchor for Memphis.
Evan Mobley: Eastern Conference Defensive Player of the Month
Mobley’s impact on both ends of the floor was pivotal in leading the Cavaliers to a league-best 12-1 record in December. His defensive efforts propelled Cleveland to the top defensive rating in the East at 106.2, showcasing his versatility and presence. Mobley was one of only three players in the East to average at least 1.4 blocks and 1.0 steals per game in December. He ranked sixth in the East in blocks per game, recorded five multi-block games, and contested 10.0 shots per game, the third-most in the conference. His ability to contest shots and disrupt opposing offenses played a significant role in Cleveland’s defensive dominance.
Defensive Masterclass
Both Jackson Jr. and Mobley delivered elite defensive performances in December, proving why they’re among the best defenders in the NBA. Whether it was Jackson Jr.’s ability to lock down opponents or Mobley’s versatility in anchoring Cleveland’s defense, their efforts were instrumental to their teams’ success.
