On January 22, 2024, the NBA witnessed an unprecedented event in its history. Joel Embiid of the Philadelphia 76ers and Karl-Anthony Towns of the Minnesota Timberwolves both scored over 60 points in their respective games, marking only the fourth time in NBA history that two players had achieved this feat on the same day. Embiid scored a staggering 70 points in the 76ers’ 133-123 win over the San Antonio Spurs, setting a new franchise record for the team, while Towns managed to score 62 points in the Timberwolves’ 128-125 loss against the Charlotte Hornets, surpassing his previous career-high and setting a new franchise record for the team.

This historic day came 18 years after Kobe Bryant’s legendary 81-point game for the Los Angeles Lakers, which is still the second-best scoring game in NBA history. Embiid and Towns put on a show reminiscent of the late Bryant’s performance, with their dazzling, historic scoring feats.

Embiid’s 70-point night tied the 12th-biggest scoring effort in NBA history, and broke Wilt Chamberlain’s 76ers team record of 68 points. Chamberlain holds the NBA record with 100 points, which he achieved while playing for the Philadelphia Warriors.

Embiid became only the ninth player in NBA history to score 70 or more points in a single game, joining Chamberlain (who did it six times), Elgin Baylor, David Robinson, Devin Booker, Donovan Mitchell, Damian Lillard, and of course, Kobe Bryant.

Towns’s scoring performance was also remarkable and set a new NBA record. He was the first player ever to record 10 2-pointers, 10 3-pointers, and 10 free throws in the same game. Lillard had achieved at least nine of each type of basket on three occasions, while James Harden had nine 1s, 2s, and 3s on two occasions. Towns’s triple-double of basket types makes him the first player to achieve this in NBA history.

Despite their impressive scoring performances, only Embiid’s team emerged victorious. Towns’s performance was overshadowed by Minnesota’s loss, which Coach Chris Finch attributed to the team’s inability to focus on the task at hand, given Towns’s remarkable scoring feat. Nonetheless, this day will go down in NBA history as a once-in-a-lifetime event where two players managed to score over 60 points on the same day.

On Monday night, the Minnesota Timberwolves played against the Charlotte Hornets in a thrilling game that saw veteran center Karl-Anthony Towns score a franchise-record 62 points, with an impressive 44 points in the first half. Despite his amazing performance, the Hornets managed to stage a remarkable comeback after erasing an 18-point deficit to stun the Timberwolves 128-125.

Towns’ scorching performance was not enough to carry the Timberwolves to victory, as he struggled in the fourth quarter, scoring only four points on 2-for-10 shooting. The Hornets took advantage of this and outscored the Timberwolves 36-18 to secure the win.

The game was not without controversy, as Towns thought he was fouled on a drive to the basket in the closing seconds with the Timberwolves trailing by one. However, the referees did not call a foul, and Towns was left frustrated after missing a 3-pointer on the final possession.

The Hornets were led by Miles Bridges, who scored 28 points, and Brandon Miller, who added 27 points. Leaky Black also played a crucial role in the Hornets’ victory, ripping the ball away from Towns on his way to the basket to preserve their tenth win of the season.

Charlotte took the lead for good at 122-121 on P.J. Washington’s floater with 3:21 remaining. LaMelo Ball also contributed 18 points for the Hornets, who had lost seven of their past eight games and had the Eastern Conference’s third-worst record entering the game.

Towns finished the game with 21-for-35 shooting from the floor, including an impressive 10-for-15 from 3-point range, and now holds the top three scoring outputs in the Wolves’ 35-year history.

In the final seconds of the game, the Timberwolves ran an isolation play for Towns, but he was blocked by Leaky Black, who then hit a pair of free throws at the other end. Towns’ desperation 3-pointer inside the final second of the game ensured that he became the 21st player in NBA history to score 60 or more points in a loss.
