De’Aaron Fox Out for the Season with Finger Injury, Spurs Guard Set for Surgery

San Antonio Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox will miss the remainder of the season due to a finger injury, the team announced. Fox is set to undergo surgery on Tuesday to repair a tendon in his left hand, officially bringing his 2024-25 campaign to an early end.

Fox initially suffered the injury back in October during training camp while he was still with the Sacramento Kings. Despite the setback, he played through the discomfort and put together another strong season, averaging 23.5 points, 6.3 assists, and 4.8 rebounds over 62 total games.

Impact in San Antonio

The Spurs acquired Fox in a blockbuster trade on February 3, hoping to pair him with Victor Wembanyama as a foundational piece for the franchise’s future. In his short time with San Antonio, Fox made an immediate impact, averaging 19.7 points, 6.8 assists, and 4.3 rebounds in 17 games.

His best performance as a Spur came on Wednesday when he erupted for 32 points, 11 assists, and nine rebounds in a 126-116 victory over the Dallas Mavericks. That game showcased the dynamic scoring, playmaking, and leadership he brought to the team before his injury forced him to the sidelines.

A Look Back at Fox’s Career

Fox has established himself as one of the NBA’s elite guards over the past few years. He was an All-Star and an All-NBA Third Team selection in the 2022-23 season, where he helped lead the Kings to their first playoff appearance in nearly two decades. The following year, he posted a career-high 26.6 points per game and led the league in steals, further proving his status as one of the best two-way guards in the league.

While his first season with the Spurs was cut short, the team remains optimistic about his future. The Spurs expect Fox to make a full recovery and be ready to go by the start of the 2025-26 season.

What’s Next for the Spurs?

With Fox sidelined, San Antonio will have to adjust for the remainder of the season. The focus now shifts to developing young players and continuing to build chemistry around Wembanyama. While Fox’s absence is a major blow, his return next season should give the Spurs a legitimate star to help lead their rebuild.

Fox’s time in San Antonio may have been brief so far, but his potential fit alongside Wembanyama has already given fans plenty to be excited about for the future. With a full offseason to recover and integrate more into the Spurs’ system, expect Fox to come back stronger than ever next year.
