Boston Celtics fans held their breath Monday night when Jayson Tatum suffered an ankle injury during the team’s 113-95 victory over the Sacramento Kings. The six-time All-Star went down late in the third quarter after a hard foul by Kings center Domantas Sabonis, but early signs indicate that the injury is not serious.
Tatum, who was leading the Celtics in scoring at the time, hit a contested three-pointer while drawing contact from Sabonis. However, as he landed, his right foot came down on Sabonis’ foot, causing him to immediately collapse to the floor. Officials reviewed the play and assessed Sabonis with a Flagrant 1 foul.
Despite being in clear pain, Tatum remained in the game just long enough to take his free throws, making one of two to extend Boston’s lead to 79-68. After that, he limped to the locker room and did not return.
Head coach Joe Mazzulla provided a reassuring update after the game, stating that Tatum seemed to be doing okay. While he didn’t see the play live, he acknowledged that the right call was made and that the medical staff was already tending to the star forward.
Tatum’s availability moving forward will be closely monitored, but the initial reports suggest that the injury is not a major concern. With Boston sitting atop the Eastern Conference, the team will likely prioritize his health as they gear up for a deep playoff run.
