The National Basketball Association (NBA) introduced a new award in the 2022-23 season, called the Kia NBA Clutch Player of the Year. The winner of this award receives The Jerry West Trophy, named after the legendary NBA player Jerry West. West was famously called “Mr. Clutch” by the renowned Los Angeles Lakers broadcaster Chick Hearn, for his exceptional shooting skills during close games.
Jerry West is a highly decorated NBA player, having won an NBA championship, been named a 14-time NBA All-Star, NBA Finals MVP, and NBA All-Star Game MVP. He has also been selected 12 times for the All-NBA Team and is a member of the 35th, 50th, and 75th NBA Anniversary Teams. During the 1971-72 season, West led the Lakers to a record 33 consecutive regular-season victories and an NBA championship.
The trophy awarded to the winner of the Kia Clutch Player of the Year Award features an NBA player shooting a jump shot, modeled after Jerry West’s perfect shooting form.
De’Aaron Fox, a player from the Sacramento Kings, was honored with the Kia Clutch Player of the Year Award in the 2022-23 NBA season.
