The NBA is built on “what ifs.” One injury, one retirement, or one trade can completely change the course of history. But let’s play the game: how many Chips could these legendary squads have added if fate didn’t get in the way?
1. The Lakers Keep Shaq (2006 and beyond)
When Shaq was dealt to Miami in 2004, it ended one of the most dominant duos in NBA history. Shaq and Kobe already had three rings together, and even though their relationship was messy, prime Shaq + prime Kobe was basically unstoppable. If the Lakers stuck it out until ’06, it’s not hard to imagine them adding at least 2 more titles—especially since Shaq won one immediately with D-Wade in Miami, and Kobe went on to win two more in LA later. Together? Dynasty extended.
2. Michael Jordan Doesn’t Retire (1994–95)
The biggest “what if” in sports history. MJ retired after his first three-peat, opening the door for Hakeem Olajuwon and the Rockets to dominate. But if Jordan had stayed? The Bulls probably don’t lose in ’94 or ’95. Even with the team shifting, MJ was still at his peak—plus, Scottie Pippen was an All-NBA force. Add at least 2 more rings to MJ’s six, and suddenly the GOAT debate looks even more untouchable.
3. KD & Klay Stay Healthy (2019 Finals)
The Warriors’ dynasty was rolling, and even after losing KD in free agency, they were set to compete. But when both Kevin Durant and Klay Thompson went down in the 2019 Finals, the Raptors took advantage. If KD and Klay are healthy? It’s almost impossible to bet against Golden State. They probably win that Finals, giving Steph & KD their third straight championship and fourth in five years.
So, the tally?
- Lakers with Shaq & Kobe sticking: +2 rings
- Bulls with no MJ retirement: +2 rings
- Warriors with KD & Klay healthy: +1 ring
That’s 5 more championships rewritten in history. And that’s just three “what ifs.” The NBA is full of them—little sliding doors moments that change dynasties forever.
