It is March 10th, 2026, and in a relatively normal game between the Miami Heat and the Washington Wizards, history was being made. 83 Points. In a single game. Bam Adebayo didn’t just score a career high, or even a season high for the league, he scored the most points in a game since 1962, before the internet, before the league was mainstream, and before most people reading were even alive.
He passed Kobe Bryant’s historic 81 Points, while being only 16 Points away from Wilt Chamberlain’s historic 100, but was this performance earned or manufactured? Yes the performance instantly entered the record books and left fans in awe in the moment, but since has sparked major debate amongst the community of the ways the record was earned.

Breaking Down Adebayo’s 83 Points
Bam finished the game with 83 Points, and while that is impressive, the way he got those points were far from ethical. Adebayo shot 43 total field goals in the game, while making 20 field goals, an NBA season high in both categories. But Adebayo shot a mere 46.5% from the field, which makes sense since he went 7 for 22 from 3, a low but respectable 31.8%. Where I draw the line is the free throw numbers, where he took and made an NBA record 36/43 Free Throws, both of which are the most in a single game.
Bam didn’t just score, in 42 Minutes of play, he also pulled down 9 Rebounds, dished out a mere 3 Assists, but also was contributing on the defensive end with 2 steals and 2 blocks.
Adebayo scored 26 Points from 2 Pointers, making 13 in total, while getting 21 of his 83 from 3, but where most of his points came from is of course, the line, where he scored 36 Points, also an NBA record. In the 1st Quarter alone, he scored 31 Points, far ahead of pace for 100, and at the end of the half, he had 43 Points. Entering the 2nd half, he slowed down a bit, scoring 19 in the 3rd and 21 in the 4th quarter.
Adebayo set the NBA record for Free Throws Made and Attempted, while being the 1st ever player with 25+ FTs and 5+ threes in 1 game, and the 1st ever player to score 70+ while shooting under 50%, if his historic scoring night could not get any better, he also set the Miami Heat franchise record for Total Points, Field Goal Attempts, Makes, Free Throw makes and attempts and the 1st ever 65+ Point game in franchise history, let alone 80+.
What people don’t like about the historic night is the context: The Wizards were on a 9 game losing streak entering the matchup, and very early in the game, the Heat found themselves up by 20+. But the offensive increasing ran through Bam just to chase a record, questioning their sportsmanship.
Comparison to the Other Top 3 Scoring Nights:
• Wilt: dominant efficiency and pace-era scoring
• Kobe: elite efficiency and comeback performance
• Bam: modern high-volume scoring with heavy foul drawing
Statistically, that 83 Points will live forever in NBA history, putting him among the likes of Wilt, Kobe and even LeBron, but is 100% going to be one of the most debated scoring performances in modern basketball.
