Jayson Tatum Has Arrived Once Again…

Jayson Tatum, a superstar-calibre player, just returned from an Achilles tear less than a year ago, yet it seems as if he was never injured at all. Tatum was just awarded the Player of the Week award for week 23, an award Tatum has won 13 times before, but this one feels… different.

Jayson Tatum has had an unusually fast return to pretty much exactly where he was before a historically serious injury, playing at a high level with no minutes restrictions, limited missed games for injury management, and very few incidents where it looked like he was going to get hurt again.

This one moment, this one player, has just shifted the entire Eastern Conference, maybe even the league. This isn’t just a comeback; it is a statement from the Boston Celtics that they are still in this to win, even in a gap year.

Jayson Tatum is The 23rd East POTW

During week 23 in the NBA, there were very few players who were as deserving of recognition as Tatum just was. Putting up prime numbers, Jayson Tatum has officially set the standard for players returning from injuries, averaging 25.7 Points, 9.7 rebounds, and 6.7 Assists while Boston went 3-0 during the week.

The real standout game that proved Tatum was truly different was his 32 Point outburst vs the Hornets. This doesn’t sound like much, 32 Points? We have seen Tatum score nearly double that, but have you seen a guy return from injury, score that many points, and still have an all-around impact?

Jayson Tatum is already producing at a near All-NBA level within 20 games of returning, and with the season going on, the playoffs getting closer, and the Celtics preparing for a long, grueling run, this is merely a taste of what Jayson Tatum is capable of.

What Injury Did Tatum Sustain and How Bad Was It?

An Achilles tear is a serious ankle injury, often common in sports due to overuse. People have a hard time walking, jumping, or even swimming, and recovery can take an exhausting 4-12 Months. Most people assumed, like Tyrese Haliburton, another guard who tore his Achilles, that Tatum would not play in 2026.

Jayson Tatum returned in under 300 days, a miraculous recovery for such a brutal injury. Compared to other stars, Jayson Tatum has been historic. There have been only 4 Players to return faster than Tatum, Billups, Elton Brand, Dominque Wilkins, and the great Kobe Bryant, none of whom returned as great as Jayson Tatum has.

What has me is how Tatum is doing this. 21 Points, 9 Rebounds, 4 Assists, his stats might be down from last season, but that’s because last year he was an MVP candidate; this season, he is looking good. The conditioning is there, defense hasn’t completely fallen off, and the intensity remains, but is this sustainable, or is it just a short burst?

Jayson Tatum Has Returned the Exact Same

He currently averages about 21 Points a night, although the efficiency has dipped from 45% FG to 39%, and the 3 has dropped 2% to 32%, he remains an elite threat every single game. The rebounding is actually a career high, while the playmaking has always been elite for his position.

Although there are some things that have remained elite for Jayson, the shooting incosistency and rythm has not fully reached him yet, but even the Celtics have said right now, getting him comfortable and impactful is much more meaningful to them for the long run.

This player of the week win is a signal, but it isn’t the whole story. If the trend continues upwards, the Celtics become serious title threats, but overall Jayson Tatum’s recovery could redefine the East as we know it, since Tatum is just entering his prime.
