Austin Reaves is betting on himself.

According to a report from Dan Woike of the L.A. Times, Reaves has declined a four-year, $90 million max extension from the Los Angeles Lakers — setting his sights on a bigger payday in 2025 free agency.

The 26-year-old guard, who emerged as one of the Lakers’ most consistent contributors over the past two seasons, reportedly believes he can command even more value next summer on the open market.

What This Means for the Lakers

The Lakers now face the growing risk of losing another key young asset for nothing, just a year after letting players like Malik Beasley and Dennis Schröder walk. Reaves’ decision to pass on guaranteed money speaks volumes — not just about his confidence, but about uncertainty within the Lakers’ current direction.

Last season, Reaves averaged 15.9 points, 5.3 assists, and 4.1 rebounds per game while shooting over 48% from the field. His crafty scoring, playmaking, and basketball IQ made him a fan favorite and a key piece alongside LeBron James and Anthony Davis.

But if the Lakers can’t show immediate signs of contention — or at least offer a stronger financial commitment — Reaves might test the waters and walk away next summer.

Free Agency Just Got Interesting

With the salary cap rising and teams like the Magic, Spurs, and Pistons projected to have significant space in 2025, Reaves could be one of the most sought-after free agents in the class.

If his bet pays off, he could be looking at a contract north of $100 million — and possibly a featured role on a rising young team.
