The Boston Celtics emerge as the 2024 NBA Champions with Jaylen Brown being voted as the NBA finals MVP with averages of 20.8 PPG, 5.4 RPG, 5 APG and 1.6 SPG shooting the ball 44% from the field.
It was the trade that sent Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce to Brooklyn in 2013 which gave Boston the draft picks to select Brown and Tatum third overall in back-to-back drafts in 2016 and 2017.
The Boston Celtics had an impressive season in 2024, leading the NBA in wins with a 64-18 record, which is the 4th best in team history. This season showcased the team’s strengths and areas for improvement.
Offensively, the Celtics were second in the NBA in points per game (PPG), averaging 120.6 points, only behind the Indiana Pacers. They also excelled in rebounds, averaging 46.3 per game, just 0.5 rebounds behind the leading Warriors. The team tied for 12th in offensive rebounds with 10.7 and finished first in defensive rebounds with 35.6 per game. However, they finished 13th in the NBA in assists with 26.9 per game, reflecting their reliance on standout scorers and leaders like Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum.
Defensively, the Celtics stood out by ranking 22nd in the NBA in steals with 6.8 and tying for first in blocks with 6.6, alongside the Thunder. The increase in blocks may be attributed to the addition of defensive stalwarts Kristaps Porzingis, Jrue Holiday, and Derrick White, although it may also be linked to the departure of Marcus Smart, known for his defensive prowess.
In terms of shooting, the Celtics ranked 4th in made field goals with 43.9 and tied for 7th in field goal percentage with 48.7%. They also set a team record by making 16.5 three-pointers per game, leading the NBA in three-point attempts with 42.5 per game and ranking second in three-point percentage with 38.8%.
Despite their offensive prowess, the Celtics only attempted 20.2 free throws per game, ranking 22nd in the NBA. They excelled in true shooting percentage, finishing first in the NBA with 60.9%, but struggled with turnovers, finishing last in the league in turnovers per game.
On an individual level, Jaylen Brown had an outstanding season, averaging 23 PPG, 5.5 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 1.2 steals, and 0.5 blocks per game, with a shooting percentage of 49.9%. He was also named to the 2024 All-Star team.
Meanwhile, Jayson Tatum’s performance was equally impressive, averaging 26.9 points, 8.1 rebounds, 4.9 assists, 1 SPG, and 0.6 blocks per game, earning a spot on the All-NBA first team and the 2024 All-Star team.
Kristaps Porzingis contributed 20.1 points, 7.2 rebounds, 2 APG, 0.7 steals, and 1.9 blocks per game, despite playing only 57 games due to injury.
Derrick White played a pivotal role, averaging 15.2 points, 5.2 APG, 4.2 rebounds, 1 SPG, and 1.2 blocks per game, earning a spot on the all-defensive team in 2024.
Jrue Holiday had a significant impact as well, averaging 12.5 points, 5.4 rebounds, 4.8 assists, 0.9 steals, and 0.8 blocks per game, and earning a place on the All-Defensive 2nd team in 2024 alongside his teammate Derrick White, and also securing his 2nd NBA championship.
