The 2024 NBA All-Star Game is set to take place in Milwaukee, and it has been now announced that Doc Rivers and his staff will be coaching the Eastern Conference team. This will be Rivers’ fourth time as an All-Star head coach, having previously coached the East in 2008 and 2011 while with Boston, and Team Kevin Durant in 2021 while with Philadelphia.
The decision to have the Milwaukee staff coach the Eastern Conference is due to Joe Mazzulla, head coach of the East-leading Boston Celtics, being ineligible after coaching in the game last year. Before Rivers took over as head coach on Monday, the Milwaukee Bucks had a record of 32-14 under interim head coaches Adrian Griffin and Joe Prunty.
Milwaukee clinched the best record in the East on Feb. 4 among the teams with a head coach eligible for the All-Star Game, hence earning Rivers and his staff the All-Star nod. It is worth noting that Boston Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla was not eligible for the position due to his participation in the All-Star Game last season.
The last time a head coach was named to an All-Star Game after being hired midseason was Ty Lue with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2016. This year’s All-Star Game will be held in Indianapolis on Feb. 18.
