The Celtics Still Have The NBA’s Best Duo

Jayson Tatum has just returned from a near–career-ending Achilles tear, while Jaylen Brown is having the best season of his career. Even so, the Celtics remain one of the top teams in the NBA, boasting the second-best record in the East. The real question everyone is asking is whether the Jays are still the best duo in the league despite their limited games together this season. The honest answer? Yes.

Jaylen Brown’s Breakout Year

Jaylen Brown, throughout his elaborate career, even though he was drafted before Tatum, has been known as the “2nd option” for the Boston Celtics. This season, he has evolved into something far more than just the sidekick behind Tatum’s greatness. Averaging a career high in Points with 28.6, Brown has turned into a Top-5 scorer in the league with the absence of Tatum, and it isn’t just the scoring that has gotten better.

Playmaking and usage have also taken a huge leap, with Brown having an increased on-ball responsibility, a more aggressive game style, and improved playmaking while still maintaining defensive consistency. Jaylen Brown has had multiple 40 Point games this year, with MVP chatter getting louder, until Tatum returned for the Celtics

Jayson Tatum’s Return + Context

Jayson Tatum has only played in 12 games for the Celtics, which even that adds to his impressive resume. Navigating an Achilles ‘ tear is a challenge in itself, but returning and playing like you never left is a completely different story. Averaging 21.3 Points, a career high 9.8 Rebounds, and 4.8 Assists, Jayson Tatum has proved he is still the same Top-5 Player in the NBA.

There have, obviously, been a few issues with Tatum’s return, like the slight efficiency dip, shooting 40.2% from the field, 5% lower than last season. The 3 Pointer surprisingly remained stable at 32.1%, and the rust seems to be wearing off, showing flashes of his old self, having a 25 Point triple-double and a 35 Point outburst in his last 2 games.

The Funniest part of all of this is: Jayson Tatum, nor Jaylen Brown, has hit their peaks yet, nor have the Boston Celtics.

Why They Still Work Together

Tatum, even post‑injury, still brings elite spacing, shot creation, and off‑ball gravity. Paired with Jaylen Brown’s downhill pressure, athleticism, and relentless rim attacks, they form a near‑perfect offensive duo, with both stars operating as switchable wings who provide high two‑way impact.

They have spent nearly a decade playing together, and with many deep playoff runs, including two Finals appearances, they are arguably the most experienced duo in the league.

TOP 3 NBA DUOS RIGHT NOW

#1 – Jayson Tatum & Jaylen Brown (Celtics)

It is evident, given all the information I have literally just given you, that Brown and Tatum are the best duo in the NBA. They have a proven championship pedigree while still being elite 2-way, 3-level wings. Brown’s MVP-level season, paired with Jayson Tatum’s Top-3 MVP past, makes them the most deadly duo when it comes to talent. When Tatum fully recovers, this duo is going to be scary.

#2 – Luka Doncic & LeBron James (Lakers)

Luka Doncic has proven that he is the best scorer in the entire NBA, 33 Points a night, leading the NBA in Points, while LeBron James is still one of the league’s best superstars. What really elevates them so high on the list for me is the combined talent and experience of both superstars. LeBron is still operating like a true top-10 player, while Luka is currently the biggest snub for the MVP race. I know they can go further in the playoffs than the media is predicting; they just have to prove it.

#3 – Shai Gilgeous-Alexander & Jalen Williams (Thunder)

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has been the most elite and efficient scorer, perhaps even players in the NBA. He is the frontrunner for the MVP. Paired with Jalen Williams 2-way versatility as a 3-level scorer, there is such clear evidence that they boast the best record in the NBA, and as the defending champions, I think they have what it takes to be the best duo; it just takes more time together.

Final Word

The Jays are still the best duo in the NBA. Their proven success, 2-way dominance, and Jaylen Brown’s leap, paired with Jayson Tatum’s strategic return, show the struggle and adversity it took to achieve this title. The Thunder’s duo might be younger and potentially have a high ceiling, and the Lakers duo might have the better offense, but it is the well-roundedness and the journey the Celtics duo has gone through that has gotten them to this place, and honestly, the Celtics now look like title contenders.
