In a recent NBA game, Dennis Schroder made a strong debut for the Brooklyn Nets, who defeated the San Antonio Spurs 123-103. Schroder made an impressive 15 points and 12 assists, while Cam Thomas scored 25 points. The win ended a three-game losing streak for the Nets. However, it was Schroder’s reaction to getting hit in the face by Victor Wembanyama that really got the crowd chanting his name. Wembanyama, the 7-foot-3 Frenchman who was the No. 1 pick in the NBA draft, had returned to the arena where he was drafted, but he managed to grab only four rebounds in the game.
Despite limited preparation time with his new team, Schroder made a quick impact for the Nets after being acquired from Toronto on Thursday for Spencer Dinwiddie, who was waived and later signed with the Los Angeles Lakers. The most impressive thing about Schroder’s debut was that he had the most assists by a Nets player in his debut since James Harden had 14 assists in January 2021.
The Spurs, who have lost seven straight games, are currently last in the Western Conference with a 10-43 record. Wembanyama, who is leading first-year players in scoring, rebounds, and steals, said coach Gregg Popovich has talked to him about the difficulty of getting through a fatiguing part of the schedule before the All-Star break arrives next weekend.
The Nets dominated the second quarter, limiting the Spurs to 18 points on 30% shooting to take a 60-48 lead at halftime. The Spurs made a comeback in the third quarter, with Wembanyama making consecutive 3-pointers to cut Brooklyn’s lead to 69-63. However, the Nets quickly regained control, with Thomas making a 3-pointer to start a 10-2 burst that gave them a 14-point lead. Thomas scored 12 points in the third quarter, and the Nets ended it spectacularly, with Schroder lobbing an inbounds pass with 0.4 seconds remaining from one sideline to the opposite side of the rim for Nic Claxton to slam down at the buzzer and make it 93-75.
Ben Simmons also performed well for the Nets, remaining in the starting lineup at point guard and finishing with 13 points on 6-for-7 shooting. Overall, it was an impressive victory for the Nets, with Schroder’s fiery response to getting hit in the face being one of the highlights of the game.
