The Golden State Warriors have officially ruled out Jimmy Butler for Game 3 of their playoff series against the Houston Rockets, sources tell ESPN. Butler, who has been a key force for the Warriors in the postseason, will be replaced in the starting lineup by Jonathan Kuminga.

The decision comes after Butler was diagnosed with a deep glute muscle contusion earlier this week. According to league sources, Butler’s MRI results were a relief for Golden State, revealing no fractures or structural damage. However, the pain and swelling were significant enough to sideline him for Saturday night’s critical matchup (8:30 p.m. ET, ABC).

Butler had been playing through pain but was visibly hampered during Game 2. In the first two games of the series, he averaged 21.5 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game, bringing his signature toughness and playoff experience to the floor. His absence will certainly be felt on both ends of the court as the Warriors look to take a 2-1 series lead over the young, energetic Rockets.

Jonathan Kuminga, stepping into the starting role, will be tasked with helping fill the void left by Butler. Kuminga has shown flashes of brilliance throughout the season, averaging 16.3 points and 5.2 rebounds while shooting an efficient 52% from the field.

Golden State coach Steve Kerr emphasized that Butler’s injury is being handled cautiously, noting, “It’s the playoffs, but Jimmy’s long-term health matters. We’re thankful it’s not worse, but he needs time to heal.”

The Warriors will rely heavily on Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green to carry the load as they look to maintain momentum against a hungry Houston team looking to steal Game 3 at home.
