After a recent Win, Victor Wembanyama went off and made something very clear: He is actively chasing both MVP and Defensive Player Of The Year this season.
Wemby Said:
Right now the focus is on my body, cause I really wanna win MVP and DPOY. So I’m trying to press the gas.
Wemby is showing the type of ambition rarely stated in the Media by NBA stars, with many avoiding discussing individual awards, Wemby was just openly chatting and fully acknowledging that he is pushing hard during the final stretch of the 2025-26 NBA Season.
In San Antonio, they have transformed their roster from a rebuilding team into a legitimate contender, where Wemby has broken out and turned into that guy for the Spurs, starting in his 1st All-Star game and is looking like a lock for both All-NBA 1st and All-Defensive 1st, but has he earned MVP?

The MVP & DPOY Debate For Wemby
A Historic Two-Way Season
Wemby is producing one of the most dominant statlines this season, and has proven himself time and time again as the best 2-way player in the NBA. He averages 24.3 Points and 11.2 Rebounds, highlighting his pure scoring instinct while still being a traditional big man and pulling down boards.
Compared to other centres before him, we have seen nothing like Victor Wembanyama. He shoots 50.7% from the field, while making 36.5% from downtown and 81.4% from the stripe, elite numbers for the tallest player in the NBA, but he isn’t done yet, still producing 3 Blocks and 1 Steal a night, locking up the Defensive Player of the Year this season.
Wemby’s elite rim protection and defensive metrics, while being a consistent double-double has contributed to the Spurs having a 48-17 record, placing them 2nd in the West and Top 3 in the entire NBA.
Historically, only 3 players ever, Michael Jordan, Hakeem Olajuwon and Giannis Antetokounmpo, have won MVP and DPOTY in the same season, putting Wemby in an exclusive club if he pulls it off, but there is 1 thing that could stop this entirely.
Health and Availability Concerns
The biggest obstacle in Wemby’s MVP case has been, and always has been durability. Since joining the NBA 3 Years ago, there have been major concerns if he can stay healthy or not, and he has proved not much since.
Wemby has suffered from a few ankle injuries earlier in the season, taking him out for a few games. Then came the knee hyperextension, which was also a pretty devastating one, but nothing major. But where the main issue lies is in his calf’s, where he has got injured the most and missed the most time as a result of it.
Even this season, the San Antonio Spurs have done a great job at managing his workload very carefully, with Wembanyama playing only about 29 Minutes a game, with many games missed due to rest and injury management.
For MVP voters especially, availability matters, and missed games can pile up quickly, weakening his case compared to other, more durable candidates, because you can’t help the team when your on the bench.
Regardless of awards, Wemby’s trajectory is becoming undeniable.
At only 22 years old, Wemby is already producing elite numbers on both ends of the floor while leading the Spurs back into contention. His willingness to openly chase greatness shows the confidence of a player who believes he can define the next era of the NBA.
If he stays healthy and San Antonio continues winning, the race for both MVP and DPOY could very well run through Wemby.
