The San Antonio Spurs were the heavy favourites heading into the 2026 NBA Finals; they had the better roster, the better star player, and overall, just a better team. No one in the world thought that the New York Knicks would be this good in the 2026 NBA Playoffs, especially in these NBA Finals.
The odds of coming back from a 1-3 series deficit are so abysmally low that people are straight up saying that the Knicks have already won the NBA Finals, but, as we saw at the end of Game 4, when the New York Knicks came back from a 29-point deficit vs the San Antonio Spurs to win the game.
Victor Wembanyama, when asked about the 3-1 New York lead, replied with a rather cocky comment, saying that he and the Spurs are entirely capable of winning the next 3 Games, but he must focus on the 1st 48 Minutes in front of him. The confidence for a team 1 loss away from a finals loss is next level, but I believe the Spurs can do it with a Game 5 win.
The Spurs and the Knicks have been evenly matched throughout the series, but surprisingly, despite being down 1-3 in the Finals, the Spurs have led for 132 minutes in 4 games, while the Knicks have only led for 51. According to UnderDogNBA on X, New York outscores San Antonio 428-420 in the Finals.
If San Antonio wants to somehow win this series, 1 of 2 things must happen: first, the Spurs have to conserve more energy and not burn out by the end of the 1st half, because throughout the 3 games they lost, 2 of them came at the end, where it was stamina and energy that allowed the Knicks to win.
Secondly, the Spurs have a Victor Wembanyama problem. In Game 4, Wemby shot 9/25 from the field, as an All-Star in a crucial game, that is unacceptable; they must manage him better and allow him to spread out his dominance through four quarters, instead of just 2, and also manage his emotions better in tough situations.
