Anthony Edwards Upgraded To Questionable For Game 2, Potential Return?

Anthony Edwards’ injury briefly threw the Minnesota Timberwolves’ season into uncertainty, but the outcome the Wolves were hoping for finally arrived: Edwards avoided the worst-case scenario.

No major ligament damage was sustained, no severe, long-term issue will persist, and no surgery will be required at all. But in the playoffs, where every game is important, timing matters just as much as the severity of the injury. Right now, his availability could decide the rest of the Minnesota Timberwolves season.

1. Edwards’ Injury: Manageable, But Limiting

Anthony Edwards situation avoided anything major, getting away with a minor knee hyperextension and a bone bruise on the same leg. A knee hyperextension is a very specific injury, where the joint is bent backwards beyond its normal flexibility, stretching the surrounding tissues and causing immediate pain.

While the knee hyperextension sounds like a major issue, Anthony Edwards will only miss around 1 more week, as the injury was minor. A major concern for me is not the hyperextension, but the overlooked bone bruise. Bone bruises can take 1-2 Weeks to heal entirely, limiting jumping, lateral movement, and sprinting, all major parts of Edwards’ game.

Although he will miss at least another week, a major win for Minnesota is that he suffered no structural damage, meaning that all of his ligaments, bones, and nerves are still intact. What the Wolves have to watch for now is not structural damage, but swelling, mobility, and how well Edwards can handle pain.

This all will still impact Anthony Edwards’ explosiveness, his cutting and landing abilities, and his overall confidence when attacking the basket. This is not a severe injury, but by no means is it a minor issue either.

The Timeline vs The Series

Anthony Edwards sustained the injury in Game 4 of the Denver Nuggets series, which was 9 days ago. Edwards is still being listed as week-to-week. A realistic return date, at the latest, would be Game 2 or 3 in the series, with a Game 1 appearance being highly unlikely, despite being listed as questionable for the start of round 2.

Anthony Edwards has been the blood, sweat, and tears of the Timberwolves this season, dominating with a career-high 28.8 Points in 61 games played. Anthony Edwards thrived as a primary shot creator and a closer, applying consistent pressure on the transition with his alien-like skills around the rim.

Minnesota Timberwolves

Without Anthony Edwards, the Timberwolves have been forced to play a slower game, averaging only 99.5 possessions per 48 minutes without Edwards in their last 6 games, proving that he elevates the Wolves. He is not just a natural-born leader; he is the future face of the league.

While a return in Game 1 for Anthony Edwards would be impressive, bone bruises, especially, can linger, and with Anthony Edwards already managing issues on both of his knees, rushing him back now could reduce the overall effectiveness of his game, or even worse, re-aggravate an injury.
