Bucks’ Antetokounmpo For Heat’s Herro: Breaking Down The Historical Trade In 2026

Every single NBA fan on earth just received one of the biggest shockers in the league since Luka Doncic was traded to the Lakers, as Giannis Antetokounmpo’s wishes to leave the Milwaukee Bucks have finally, after 9 months of rumours and failed trades, been answered after ESPN’s Shams Charania reported it less than an hour ago.

The End Of An Era for Antetokounmpo and the Bucks

Giannis Antetokounmpo is not only one of the greatest players to ever touch a basketball, but perhaps after 13 seasons of dominating the record books, the greatest Milwaukee Buck of all time, overtaking Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and there are not that many people who could deny this fact.

The Milwaukee Bucks decided to trade their superstar after he reportedly requested a trade, but it is still unclear when or why he requested a trade in the first place. The Bucks were rumoured to trade him at the deadline, but waited till after the offseason for better offers from Giannis Antetokounmpo’s preferred destinations.

Giannis Antetokounmpo was meant to be the loyal star, the one player in the NBA, outside of Stephen Curry, that stuck with their team through the thick and thin, but not winning a championship or any major playoff success past the 2021 championship run began to get to Giannis.

Giannis’ Wall of Acolades and Awards In Milwaukee

Giannis, as it stands, is a 2 time MVP, winning back-to-back MVPs in 2019 and 2020, while winning an NBA Championship and Finals MVP only a year after. It looked like the Milwaukee Bucks were building a dynasty, and that Giannis Antetokounmpo was going to be the face of it.

Past this, Giannis Antetokounmpo has also claimed 7 All-NBA teams, 4 All-Defensive teams, the 2020 Defensive Player of the Year, 10 All-Star appearances, all consecutive, while winning the 2021 All-Star MVP. Giannis was the essence of success, but a few dry years full of heartache and injuries got to him; he needed a change of scenery.

Fastforward to June 23rd 2026, and all of his wishes and demands have finally been fulfilled. The Milwaukee Bucks send Giannis Antetokounmpo and his good friend Bobby Portis Jr. to the Miami Heat for Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis, the No. 13 overall pick in the 2026 draft, two unprotected first-round picks, a 2030 first-round pick swap, and a second-round pick.

First of all, excluding Giannis himself, the Bucks could not get the deal done with just Giannis himself, due to salary incompatibility and margin of safety in the deal, also sending NBA veteran and long-time Bucks player Bobby Portis Jr. to Miami, as well as Giannis, perhaps to accompany him in his new adventure.

On the Miami Heat’s end, they spared no expense in getting Giannis on the roster, sending away Tyler Herro, the All-Star guard and long thought to be a core piece in the Miami Heat’s new rebuild. Another shocking move for the Heat was sending away Kel’El Ware, the young, promising centre, supposed to be the next Shaq or Wemby.

The Miami Heat Trade Tyler Herro For Giannis…

The Heat also decided to send out Jamie Jaquez Jr., the promising, versatile forward, as well as the rookie Kasparas Jakucionis, who was off the table for the Bucks for a long time, before Pat Riley quickly cracked, but the deal did not go through just because of the players the Bucks received; the draft capital persuaded them as well.

With the 13th pick in the loaded 2026 NBA Draft included in the deal, as well as 2031 and 2033 unprotected 1st round picks, 2030 1st round pick swap, and a 2033 2nd round pick, the Milwaukee Bucks receive a bundle of young players, as well as a haul of Draft capital, replenishing their dwindling supply.

I would grade this deal a B- on the Miami Heat’s end. Here is why. The Miami Heat do not have a reliable Point Guard to take the reins on the offensive end, and shooting for the front court between Giannis and Bam Adebayo is going to be a nightmare for the Heat, but on the defensive end, they might be the deadliest duo in the entire league.

For the Milwaukee Bucks, they finally get rid of the superstar they so desperately tried to trade, and I grade this a B+ for them. Not only do they get a haul of young players and promising picks, but they also get rid of Giannis’ huge contract, and gain more trading power for a potential rebuild in the near future.

The Bucks finally trade Giannis Antetokounmpo, and the Heat add to their list of superstars who have joined them in the past. The Miami Heat have made 2 Finals appearances in the last 6 Years, with Giannis on the roster and an intention of building their roster around him, it is hard to believe that they can’t make the Finals in the 2026-27 season.
